Prof. Janina Ramirez is a number one best-selling author, award-winning documentary maker, and cultural historian based at the University of Oxford. With a passion for bringing the past to life, she has written for specialist and non-specialist, young and old readers, across fiction and non-fiction.
Her books include Legenda: The Real Women Behind the Myths that Shaped Europe (out in paperback 2nd July), Femina: A New History of the Middle Ages Through the Women Written Out of It (Sunday Times No. 1 best-seller, and Waterstones Book of the Month/Year), Goddess (in conjunction with the British Museum), Way of the Waves and Riddle of the Runes (which won the Young Quills Award). Her books have been translated into over 15 languages and are international best-sellers.

She has written and presented documentaries for the BBC, Arte, PBS and more, for over 15 years, including Britain's Millennium of Monasteries, The Private Lives of Kings and Chivalry and Betrayal.
She has presented Radio 4's Front Row and delivered over 70 episodes of The Art Detective. Her filming has taken her around the world, from the Olmec Heads of Mexico to the Mogao Caves of China.
HISTORIAN
A medievalist at heart
Janina gained her PhD from the Centre for Medieval Studies, University of York, following a degree in English Literature at Oxford.
She is currently Visiting Professor of Medieval Studies at the University of Lincoln, and Director of Studies in History of Art at Harris Manchester College, Oxford. She is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and the Royal Society of Arts, a patron of several charities, and Lifetime President of Gloucester History Festival.
